Ezra

I met Ezra on the 16th November 2015 for the first time, when he was 1 year and 9 months old. What a beautiful little boy he was, with his round cheeks and big, brown eyes. When Ezra was only a couple months old he had a seizure, he was rushed to hospital and when the Doctors ran tests the verbal report that they gave to the family was ‘his brain is spoilt and he would be no good’. However, Ezra’s family loved him unconditionally, continuing to care for him in the hope that one day they would find a way to support his needs.

Over the next couple of years, we worked closely with Ezra’s family, spending many days together discussing Ezra’s medical needs, making and carrying out care plans working alongside Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. Ezra started regular physiotherapy and was provided with supportive equipment at home, we offered sensory input and encouraged the family to stimulate Ezra at home.

Ezra’s family were his Mum, Dad, two older sisters and his younger brother. They all loved and cared for Ezra greatly and were so grateful to begin to understand his needs and be able to better support him. Seeing the progression Ezra made was fantastic for us all, he began to hold his own head up, respond more and more to others touch and voice and began to smile and laugh.

Ezra had a lot of very complex medical needs and in Ghana there is still little understanding and a lack of accessibility to appropriate medical care. Sadly, in 2017 Ezra passed away due to unusual seizure activity. This was absolutely heart-breaking news and his family were devastated. I am so pleased that we were able to support Ezra and his family and make a positive impact in his life. Ezra was such a special and lovely little boy who will always mean so much to us. Forever in our heart, Ezra will inspire us to help more families and influence the opportunities in Ghana for children with complex medical and special needs.
