Stanley

Stanley is 11 years old. He is a very cool young man, with a passion for learning. He spoke good English and told me that he goes to school and absolutely loves it! He is in Junior High School form 1, which is normal for his age. When he is older, he really wants to be a Doctor. I asked him what he likes to do when he is not at school, he thought for a minute and then said, ‘I really just like learning’.

We recently took Stanley to see an orthopedic surgeon at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he was diagnosed with blounts disease. This is a growth disorder of the tibia (shin bone), leading to the appearance of bowed legs which continues to progressively worsen over time. K.A.T.H. can offer Stanley an operation to reshape his shinbone to the correct alignment and use Temporal Spatial Frames to hold the leg in place during the healing phase. With this and the use of physiotherapy Stanley will regain full use of his legs and eliminate the associated pain.

The Doctor has given a quote of 20,000 Ghana Cedi for the operation, which is equivalent to £4,000. This will cover surgeon fees, the cost of the surgical room, medication, etc. There may also be some associated costs, such as physiotherapy, transport to and from hospital, future check-ups and adjustments to the temporal spatial frame.

Despite Stanley being such a clever boy and his heart set on being a Doctor, in Ghana a physical disability may prevent him from many opportunities in his lifetime. Through providing this operation it will be life changing for Stanley.
